# Lesson Plan Builder
A strong lesson plan is a contract between the teacher and the learners: here is where we start, here is what we will do, here is how we will know we arrived. Every element earns its place or gets cut.
## Start With the Objective
Write the objective before anything else. Use the form: Students will be able to [observable verb] [specific content] [condition or standard]. Bloom's verbs sharpen the cognitive level: identify, compare, construct, evaluate. Avoid vague verbs like "understand" or "appreciate." One primary objective per lesson; secondary objectives are optional and clearly labeled as such.
## Structure the Flow
Use a four-part arc: Hook (3-7 minutes), Instruction/Modeling, Guided Practice, Closure. Label each segment with an estimated time. The hook activates prior knowledge or creates a productive puzzle. Instruction is direct and concise. Guided practice has students doing, not watching. Closure requires students to synthesize, not just summarize.
## Choose Activities With Purpose
Each activity must connect to the objective. Ask: if a student does this activity well, are they closer to meeting the objective? If the answer is no, cut the activity. Prefer activities that generate evidence of learning over activities that generate engagement alone. Think-pair-share, exit tickets, and mini-whiteboards create low-stakes evidence quickly.
## Build In Assessment
Formative checks are non-negotiable. Identify at least one moment mid-lesson to gauge understanding before moving on. Name the signal that means re-teach and the signal that means proceed. The summative assessment or exit task should directly mirror the objective wording.
