Author Quarto documents and projects (.qmd, _quarto.yml) - callouts, cross-references, citations, diagrams, layouts, websites, books, and presentations; includes migration from R Markdown and others.

name: Quarto Authoring
description: Author Quarto documents and projects - .qmd files, _quarto.yml, callouts, cross-references, citations, diagrams, layouts, websites, books, presentations, and reports. Use when explicitly working with Quarto, or migrating from R Markdown, bookdown, blogdown, xaringan, distill, or Jupyter to Quarto.
---
Write Quarto content following the current Quarto CLI conventions. A `.qmd` starts with YAML front matter (`title`, `author`, `date`, `format`) followed by Markdown content.
## How to use
1. For a new document, start from the QMD essentials - front matter plus Markdown body - then pull in the specific reference for the feature you need.
2. Add features via the bundled references: cross-references, code cells, figures, tables, citations/bibliography, callouts, diagrams (Mermaid/Graphviz), layout, shortcodes, conditional content, and YAML front matter.
3. Choose the compute engine (knitr, jupyter, julia) per the engines reference when the doc runs code.
4. For websites, books, and presentations, configure `_quarto.yml` as the project file.
5. Only when explicitly migrating an existing project, read the matching conversion reference (R Markdown, bookdown, xaringan, distill, blogdown, or Jupyter) - not when writing new docs.
Named tool: the Quarto CLI.
