# Expert Interview
Design interview guides that extract deep, honest insight from experts — without leading
them. A good guide is a structure, not a script.
## 1. Define the learning objectives
List the 3-5 things you must learn. Every question should map to one objective.
Distinguish "must learn" from "nice to know" so you can cut under time pressure.
## 2. Structure the guide
Use a funnel:
- **Warm-up**: easy rapport-building questions; establish the expert's background.
- **Broad context**: open questions about their domain and how they see the problem.
- **Core**: targeted questions on your objectives.
- **Deep dives / laddering**: drill into the richest threads.
- **Wrap-up**: "What did I not ask that I should have?" and referrals.
## 3. Write open, neutral questions
- Open with "How," "What," "Walk me through," "Tell me about" — never yes/no.
