Drive a running Obsidian vault from the command line - read, create, search, and manage notes, tasks, and properties, plus reload and debug plugins and themes.

name: Obsidian CLI
description: Use the `obsidian` CLI to read, create, search, and manage notes, tasks, and properties in a running Obsidian vault - and to reload, screenshot, and debug plugins and themes. Use when the user asks to operate their vault from the terminal or develop Obsidian extensions.
---
Drive a running Obsidian instance with the `obsidian` CLI. Requires Obsidian to be open; run `obsidian help` for the live command list (docs: https://help.obsidian.md/cli).
## How to use
1. Target a file with `file=<name>` (wikilink-style) or `path=<vault/path.md>`; omit both to act on the active file. Prefix `vault="<name>"` to target a specific vault.
2. Read/write notes: `obsidian read file="My Note"`, `obsidian create name="New" content="# Hi" silent`, `obsidian append file="My Note" content="line"` (use `\n`/`\t` for multiline).
3. Search and navigate: `obsidian search query="term" limit=10`, `obsidian backlinks`, `obsidian tags counts`, daily notes via `obsidian daily:read` / `daily:append`.
4. Manage metadata and tasks: `obsidian property:set name="status" value="done"`, `obsidian tasks daily todo`.
5. Develop plugins/themes: reload with `obsidian plugin:reload id=...`, check `obsidian dev:errors`, then verify via `dev:screenshot`, `dev:dom`, `dev:console`, or `eval code="..."`.
Parameters use `key=value` (quote spaces); flags like `silent`, `overwrite`, and `--copy` are bare switches.
